Not quite was you normally see on the #Bali hashtag is it?
Bali Belly, Travellers Diarrhoea, Delhi belly, Montezuma's revenge, GI trots… Gastroenteritis, whatever you want to call it. This bad boy has knocked me for a 6 and has completely taken me out for the week. What started out as feeling a little off, ended with me curled up on the bathroom floor in a foetal position wishing someone would kill me.

The infamous Bali Belly, another name for traveller’s diarrhoea is caused by consuming contaminated food or water. Bali Belly is usually caused by bacteria, but in my case by a parasite. Yep, you read right. At this moment whilst writing this I have parasites in my body that have caused an infection and inflammation in my intestines. Nice work guys, you can now vacate my body!
Anyway, I thought as we are here in Bali sharing our journey, as gross at this is. I might share my experience in case you are ever in this situation, you can know what to expect, do or even pay. The whole (Bacterial) Bali belly is kind’a common. I think I read somewhere 30-50% of Aussie tourists will at some point experience Bali Belly.
We were mindful trying to avoid it, drinking bottled water, good hand hygiene, probiotics, hand sanitiser, etc, but the sneaky buggers still got me.
For me it started with feeling off, nausea and not wanting to eat. Then came the diarrhoea. After that, horrendous stomach cramps that had you begging for mercy, followed by vomiting and then when you think it can’t get any worse the vomiting and diarrhoea decide they want to mess with you and come at the same time. I ended up finding comfort on the cold bathroom floor with a towel as a pillow in between bouts. Fevers, headaches and blurred vision follow after that.

When the ambulance came I was pretty dehydrated, and blood pressure was quite low. They found it hard to get a canula in to get a blood sample and give me an IV. Once in though, I was given fluids, electrolytes, banana bags, pain killers, antibiotic, anti nausea etc whilst they waited for test results.

After days of swimming & exploring the local area, mama needed a massage to sort her dodgy neck out... and stumbled into this Day Spa that has a room that can do 3 massages at once! Deep Tissue for me, relaxation for the kids. Daddy in a cafe reading, baby in pram sleeping... Winning ❤️

The last few days Steve & I have rode around Ubud looking for our next home.

We’ve seen homestays and guesthouses, to hotels and luxury villas and everything in between. We’ve ridden down crazy steep hills and down roads that are I am not sure we would actually class as roads back home. When cruising around I’ve learnt there are 3 things you will definitely need: Always pack your poncho (you never know when the skies will open up on you) trust me we learnt the hard more than once! Water, that sun is unforgiving, stay hydrated. ‘Map.me’ is a must have app when navigating around Bali offline.
I’ve also been researching scooters, schools, the rental market and nannies. Wrapping my head around the bartering system, the tourist prices vs expat prices and local prices etc. I am no expert by any means but have quickly learnt that having a local or expat take you under their wing is key to saving you a lot of time and money.
Tomorrow the kids will start school, a trial for the next couple of weeks and if they like it we may enrol them for the whole term.
Next week we will move to a new villa which we’ll call home for a few weeks (maybe longer, who knows?) It isn’t fancy by any means but it’s the location that got me… because seriously, what’s the use of a big fancy place with a gorgeous private pool if it’s far from where all our activities are? I have done that before, and the isolation and constant car rides was enough to drive anyone insane. Instead, something more basic but in a location where cafes, play areas, pools and fitness clubs are within walking distance is more suited for us.

I am now up to speed with our visas and already on to converting them over from a Tourist Visa to Social Visa. So, staying longer is not an issue. Not having to leave the country and re-enter is also a bonus! (Who wouldn’t love to save $$$ on 5 return flights!) Other than that, we are all good. Mr N has already had 2 doctor’s visits! He is all good now. The medical centres were clean and staff were lovely and costs were not that bad. Even so if we can leave doctor’s visits off our ‘Lists To Do in Bali’ I would be very happy.
