Life Changing Moments in a Split Second…

It’s funny how things turn out. I am always amazed at how in the blink of an eye everything can change. Your life, the people in your life and your overall perspective on things.

Recently our family went to the river for a bit of a family catch up for a water skiing/ wake-boarding long weekend. A few days before my hubby and I got into a bickering battle. You know the classic husband wife arguments over the typical things like parenting, money, the house, responsibilities, life in general. By the time we set off for our 2.5 hour drive, staying silent seemed like the best way to travel. Like they say ‘If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all’.

The next day everyone was pumped, ready to get on the river and have some fun. The grandparents watched the kids on the river bank whilst hubby, my brother in law, sister in law and I suited up and jumped on the boat.

My sister in law was up first and did an amazing job on the water, a pure natural. Next up was me, all was good until it went a bit pear shaped. On my last go before I was to call it quits for the day I got hurt. It wasn’t anyone’s fault, just the way it all panned out. I was up skiing and hubby told my brother in law to “slow down a bit”. The boat slowed too much so hubby said “go a bit faster!” The boat went too fast and I was launched out of my skis, through the air, crashing into the water. I don’t remember much except a ‘crunch’ and a horrendous pain in my neck.

Most times after a stack, you pop up in the water, look for the boat and swim over to collect any missing skis whilst the boat swings around and collects you. This time, I was a sitting duck bobbing around in pain. My hubby dived off the boat and swam straight to me without his wet suit or a life jacket. He helped me, comforted me and got me back to the boat. It’s in those moments you realise just how silly all that bickering those days before or even the silent drive really were.

If there is one thing my hubby does exceptionally well, it is treating injuries. He has the mind, knowledge and passion for health, fitness and anatomy (he really should have been a doctor, or even a paramedic but that’s another story). Once we got back to shore he was onto it and the next day had booked me in to see a Physio and chauffeured me there.

Nothing was broken, just whiplash, torn neck muscles, rotated ribs & muscle spasms. I locked up my right side from my C1 to the back of my knee. My left side was locked up from C1 to the bottom of my shoulder blade. The headaches were horrendous. They said I presented with injuries similar to someone driving 40-50kph (25-30mph) and having a head-on collision.

That was a month ago. I’m still having physio twice a week in addition to other therapies (Osteo, Chiro, massage, cupping, acupuncture). The headaches are still persistent, the ribs are still not right, and the weakness in my arms and hands are still a challenge.

It could have been a lot worse and I am grateful it wasn’t.  It has taught, and is still teaching me, some hard lessons. Life changing moments like these wake you up and make you realise that the small things we worry about are only that. At the time, they all seem important, but in perspective, they generally aren’t.

Here are 5 lessons I have taken from this experience:
  • Selfcare – Whether you are a mamma or not you need to look after yourself all the time. Don’t just find a few minutes here and there, you need to make time for yourself everyday.
  • Ask for help – I’m a very proud and stubborn woman and I never ask for help, but in the last couple of weeks I have succumbed to admitting I am not superwoman and have asked for help from others, which has alleviated a lot undue pressure & stress.
  • Use it or lose it – I love yoga, bike riding, playing sports… but I don’t do it. When I am on my game I could do yoga every day of the week but I let ‘things’ get in the way. I’d go from everyday, to 4 times a week, to 2-3 times a week and before you know it nothing. I truly believe if I was fitter and stronger right now my injuries would not have been as bad as they are.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff – My hubby and I have been literally living in each others pocket for the last 3 years (travelling, working from home etc). Certainly not for the faint hearted. It has it’s challenges but days like the accident remind me that he’s got my back (literally) and some battles really need not be battles.
  • We only have one life – Ok, so it was no where near a “near death” experience. There was no light bulb moment or wake up calls or anything dramatic as that. But I was gently reminded that I do only have one life and one body. So, I might as well be doing what I love before it’s all too late.

At the end of the day I want to be the girl saying “I can’t believe I did that” and not “Oh I wish I did that…”

    Accidents are scary, no matter how minor or major they turn out to be What you say is true. Even something relatively small makes you realise sometimes just what you have got, and makes us more grateful for what we have. It’s easy, when you’re sleep deprived, or worn out or whatever other emotion being a wife and mother brings to bicker and fight about things that really are quite small, but at the time they feel huge.

    I hope you are able to find relief soon. Maybe now would be a good time to start gentle yoga again?
